Job description

  • The overall purpose of this job is to provide day-to-day operational leadership and management of the Radiology Department, ensuring safe, timely, patient-centred and high-quality diagnostic imaging services. The Radiology Manager is responsible for workforce coordination, service delivery, equipment and resource utilisation, quality and safety systems, regulatory compliance, performance monitoring and continuous improvement, while supporting the Head of Department in implementation of the department’s clinical, operational and strategic objectives.

Responsibility

  • Service operations – Plan, coordinate and oversee daily radiology operations across modalities and service areas to maintain safe patient flow, appropriate staffing, efficient utilisation of imaging capacity and continuity of service.
  • Workforce management – Prepare and manage duty rosters, allocate staff according to workload and competency, monitor attendance and leave, support recruitment and onboarding, and address operational performance issues in line with hospital policy.
  • Quality and patient safety – Ensure imaging protocols, quality assurance and quality control processes are implemented, audited and continuously improved; investigate incidents, near misses, complaints and service failures and ensure corrective actions are completed.
  • Equipment and infrastructure – Monitor equipment performance, uptime and preventive maintenance; coordinate fault reporting, service visits and contingency arrangements; contribute to equipment replacement planning, procurement specifications and acceptance processes.
  • Performance and turnaround time – Monitor departmental workload, waiting times, examination completion, reporting workflow and turnaround-time indicators; identify bottlenecks and implement corrective operational measures in collaboration with radiologists, radiographers and other stakeholders.
  • Governance, data protection and documentation – Ensure departmental policies, SOPs, imaging protocols, operational records, audits, mandatory registers and statistical records are accurate, current, appropriately approved and maintained under document-control requirements. Ensure compliance with patient confidentiality, data-protection requirements, appropriate access to patient information and hospital accreditation standards.
  • Protocols, SOPs and document control – Coordinate the development, review, implementation and periodic updating of departmental SOPs, imaging protocols, work instructions and operational guidelines in collaboration with the HoD, radiologists and relevant subject-matter leads; maintain appropriate records of approval, revision and staff communication.
  • Radiation safety – Support implementation of departmental radiation-safety requirements and work collaboratively with the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) to ensure staff compliance, appropriate escalation of radiation-safety concerns and completion of required corrective actions.
  • Resource and cost management – Support annual budgeting and cost control; monitor consumables, contrast media, stock levels, overtime and other departmental resources and ensure appropriate utilisation and accountability.
  • Staff development – Identify training needs, coordinate induction and competency assessment, support CPD and in-service education, and promote a culture of professionalism, teamwork, accountability and continuous learning.
  • Stakeholder coordination – Liaise with the HoD, radiologists, nursing, wards, clinics, theatres, emergency services, IT, biomedical engineering, procurement, finance and other departments to resolve operational issues and improve patient pathways.
  • Digital systems and improvement – Support effective use and governance of radiology information systems, PACS/reporting workflows and departmental digital tools; participate in service redesign, automation, data-quality and improvement projects.
  • Service development and change management – Support implementation of new imaging services, equipment, workflows and departmental systems, including staff readiness, documentation, training, operational rollout and post-implementation review.
  • Leadership and escalation – Act as the operational focal point for the department, communicate priorities clearly, manage day-to-day escalations and promptly refer clinical, medico-legal, regulatory, financial or strategic matters requiring HoD authority.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Radiography and Medical Imaging from a recognised institution; a relevant Bachelor’s degree is preferred for the managerial role.
  • Postgraduate qualification or formal training in healthcare management, leadership, quality management or a related field is an added advantage.
  • Previous experience working within a JCI-accredited hospital or participation in Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation, survey preparation or quality-improvement activities is an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ relevant radiology/imaging experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory, team-lead or management role, preferably in a hospital environment.
  • Current professional registration/licensure and good standing with applicable Kenyan regulatory requirements for the individual’s professional scope.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of patient safety, data protection, quality management and healthcare accreditation requirements, with working awareness of radiation
