Job description

Medical Jobs, Lions Sightfirst Eye Hospital Jobs. Responsible for performing cataract surgeries, assessing patients before and after procedures, managing surgical complications, supporting high-volume surgical services, participating in outreach programmes, training clinical staff, and supporting quality improvement. Requires an MBChB degree, postgraduate qualification in Ophthalmology, professional registration and a valid practising licence. The position is based in Nairobi and requires on-site work.

Job Purpose 

To deliver high-quality, safe, and high-volume cataract surgical services, ensuring excellent visual outcomes, adherence to clinical standards, and contribution to outreach programs aimed at reducing avoidable blindness at LSEH.

Key Responsibilities

Surgical Services

  • Perform cataract surgeries (e.g., SICS, Phacoemulsification) as per clinical indications
  • Ensure adherence to surgical safety protocols and WHO Surgical Safety Checklist
  • Maintain high standards of asepsis and infection prevention

Pre-Operative Assessment

  • Conduct thorough pre-operative evaluation and patient selection
  • Confirm diagnosis, surgical plan, and intraocular lens (IOL) calculations
  • Ensure informed consent is obtained and documented

Post-Operative Care

  • Review post-operative patients and manage complications
  • Provide appropriate treatment and follow-up schedules
  • Monitor surgical outcomes and patient recovery

Clinical Governance & Quality Improvement

  • Participate in surgical audits, outcome monitoring, and M&M meetings
  • Ensure compliance with SOPs, SafeCare standards, and clinical guidelines
  • Contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives

Outreach Surgical Programs

  • Participate in high-volume outreach surgical camps
  • Support screening, patient selection, and surgical planning in outreach
  • Ensure safe surgical practices in outreach settings

Team Leadership & Mentorship

  • Supervise and mentor OCOs, nurses, and theatre staff
  • Support training and skill development within the surgical team
  • Promote teamwork and adherence to protocols

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate surgical records and operative notes
  • Document outcomes, complications, and follow-up care
  • Contribute to surgical data reporting and performance tracking

Infection Prevention & Patient Safety

  • Ensure strict adherence to IPC protocols in theatre and outreach
  • Promote a culture of patient safety and risk management
  • Identify and report adverse events and near misses

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Number of cataract surgeries performed (as per target)
  • Surgical complication rate (within acceptable standards)
  • Good visual outcome rate (e.g., ≥80% achieving target vision as per WHO standards)
  • Post-operative infection rate (minimized)
  • Patient satisfaction scores
  • Compliance with surgical safety protocols (100%)
  • Participation in outreach surgical programs

 Reporting & Communication Lines

  • Reports to: Head of Clinical Services / Medical Superintendent
  • Works closely with: Ophthalmologists, OCOs, Theatre Nurses, Optometrists, Outreach Team, Medical Records
  • External collaboration: Outreach partners, referral facilities, community stakeholders

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Diploma or Degree in Clinical Medicine with specialization in Ophthalmology or equivalent
  • Certified Cataract Surgeon (recognized training program)
  • Valid registration and practicing license with relevant regulatory body
  • Proven experience in performing cataract surgeries

Desirable

  • Experience in high-volume cataract surgery programs
  • Experience in outreach surgical camps
  • Training in quality improvement or SafeCare standards

  • Strong surgical skills in cataract procedures (SICS, Phaco)
  • Excellent clinical decision-making ability
