Security and investigation searches cover guarding, control-room monitoring, loss prevention, compliance support and investigative roles. These jobs have different legal, training and experience requirements. Read the vacancy carefully and do not treat a general security background as automatic qualification for an investigator position.
Separate observation from conclusion
An accurate incident note records what was directly observed, the time, location, people notified and action taken under procedure. It should not turn an assumption into a fact. In an application exercise, use fictional names and locations so no former employee, customer or incident can be identified.
Create two columns labelled observation and information reported by another person. Add a third column for material that still needs verification. This distinction helps prevent rumours from becoming part of a formal record and gives a supervisor a clear starting point for review.
Build a neutral incident-note sample
Write a short fictional scenario involving an unattended access card. Record the time noticed, condition, immediate safeguard and authorised person notified. Do not publish site layouts, access-control details or instructions that could weaken security.
Review the sample for emotive words and unsupported motives. Replace statements such as “the person intended to steal” with the actual behaviour observed. An application portfolio can demonstrate disciplined writing without including evidence from a real case.
Respect role and evidence boundaries
Do not claim that you conducted interviews, searches or evidence seizures if your role was to report an incident and preserve the scene. Describe who authorised each action and how custody or handover was recorded. A job guide cannot replace employer procedures or applicable law.
For CCTV or control-room work, explain experience logging events, escalating alerts and maintaining confidentiality. Avoid public screenshots. For loss-prevention or compliance support, show document review and discrepancy reporting without exposing customer or employee information.
Write a targeted CV
Lead with the role family and relevant training. A guard CV may emphasise patrol records and access control; an investigation-support CV may prioritise factual reports, file organisation and careful handovers. Do not use an “investigator” title if that was not your position.
Use bullets that connect a task, control and outcome. A truthful example might say that you maintained shift incident logs and escalated incomplete entries for supervisor review. Include quantities only when reliable and non-confidential.
Prepare for assessment and interview
Practise reading a fictional scenario, identifying known facts and listing unanswered questions. Explain when you would call a supervisor or emergency service according to the employer's process. Before applying, confirm the employer, licence requirements, location, shifts and deadline. Send documents through the verified route and never pay for recruitment.
