Job description

Responsible for providing expert legal support by drafting, reviewing, and providing opinions on all credit related issues while delivering sound and strategic legal advisory to mitigate potential risks to the bank's business units. Main Responsibilities: Draft, prepare and review of security documents and lending related contracts to ensure legal soundness and compliance with regulatory requirements. Coordinate and monitor the registration of security documents with relevant authorities to ensure timely perfection of securities. Maintain accurate records and tracking systems for all registered securities & produce corresponding periodic/ad hoc extract reports as required. Provide timely and well-reasoned legal opinions to business units, branches, and internal credit committees. Support Legal Manager/Senior Manager in handling high-value transactions and regulatory compliance to safeguard the bank's interests while enabling business growth through sound legal support and proactive risk management. Advise on legal risks and recommend mitigation strategies in lending transactions. Verify and acknowledge receipt of security documents submitted for safe custody. Ensure proper filing, safe custody, and retrieval of security documents in compliance with internal policies. Liaise with branches, external Counsels, and relevant departments to resolve pending issues hindering completion of registration of securities, including the post-registration return and proper custody of security documents. Respond promptly to different queries raised from internal stakeholders. Provide the legal status of security documentation/perfection from internal stakeholders. Facilitate the discharge of security documents upon loan settlement and manage transfers under power of sale in accordance with internal mandate and legal requirements. Prepare periodic and ad-hoc reports on documentation status, compliance, the Unit's tasks performed and risk issues as directed by the Head of Legal/Senior Manager. Support audits and regulatory inspections by providing timely and accurate documentation and records. Prepare court pleadings and represent the bank in courts of law/ Tribunals. Keep abreast with new developments in the regulatory operating framework cum best practices and advise on the required action by the bank in implementation of such changes. Undertake additional tasks and special projects assigned by the Head of Legal/ Directorate to support the overall Legal Directorate's objectives. Knowledge and Skills: Sound legal understanding of general banking, commercial laws, corporate and commercial lending transactions & regulatory requirements affecting lending, security creation, and documentation. Demonstrated experience and ability to draft, review, and interpret lending-related legal documents with strong attention to detail. Strong ability to identify legal risks in credit processes and recommend appropriate mitigants to support informed business decisions. Ability to provide timely, practical, and commercially sound legal advice on credit, lending and security related matters while managing legal and regulatory risks. Demonstrated experience in handling multiple tasks simultaneously and ability to work effectively in a dynamic, collaborative, and fast-paced environment. Excellent stakeholder engagement skills with ability to interact with supported functions and external stakeholders. Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team. High standards of integrity, professionalism, confidentiality, and sound judgment. Able to learn, understand and apply new technologies efficiently towards achievement of the Directorate's overall goals. A high degree of personal organization and self-management. Qualifications and Experience: Bachelor Degree in Law (LL.B) Must be enrolled as an Advocate Master's degree in Law or Business studies is an added advantage.
