Job Description
Position: Project SHERQ OfficerCompany: Illovo Sugar (Malawi) plc / TiiwaleOrganizational Unit: Estate Project Management OfficeReporting To: Resident EngineerLocation: Nchalo – Shire Valley Transformation Project, MalawiJob Category: Fixed Term Contract (23 Months)Qualifications & Requirements:Diploma/Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or equivalentThose with a SAMTRAC/NEBOSH qualification; ISO 9001/Lead Auditor qualification will have an advantage5–10 years' experience in Occupational Health and Safety, preferably in a construction environmentGood communication skills (Verbal and Written), with the ability to engage and influence othersProject management skillsGood working knowledge with community stakeholdersKey Duties & Responsibilities:Implements the project SHERQ Management Plan, develops site-specific procedures and risk controls, and ensures uniform safety standards across all major contractorsAdministers Permit-to-Work systems (excavation, confined spaces, hot work), verifies daily clearances, and enforces trench safety measures such as shoring, barricading, and signagePerforms routine site audits, safety walks, and hazard assessments specifically targeting excavation works, pipe laying, and heavy lifting operationsAligns operations with Malawi occupational health and safety requirements and MEPA ESMP standards, managing controls for erosion, soil, waste, dust, noise, and water protectionDirects accident, near-miss, and root-cause investigations, tracks corrective actions, and maintains emergency response plans and drillsLeads site inductions, task briefings, and toolbox talks for all personnel while promoting safety awareness campaigns and supervising contractor SHERQ teamsParticipates in constructability/risk meetings with site managers, oversees GRP piping safety/quality controls, and escalates critical risks directly to the Construction ManagerCompiles monthly HSE statistical reports, tracks man-hours and injury metrics (LTIs, medical cases), analyzes trend data, and maintains official SHERQ compliance registers for project leadershipHow to Apply:Please send your application letters together with a detailed CV with copies of relevant certificates, traceable referees and National ID to:The Human Resources Mill HeadIllovo Sugar (Malawi) PlcPrivate Bag 50BlantyreOr through email: nchalohr@illovo.co.zaClosing Date: 30th September 2026Additional Information:Only shortlisted candidates will be acknowledgedIllovo is an equal opportunity employer, and women are encouraged to applyIllovo Sugar (Malawi) plc is the country's leading producer of raw, refined and specialty sugars; employing more than 9,000 employeesIllovo Sugar (Malawi) plc is part of Illovo Sugar Africa Group; a wholly-owned subsidiary of Associated British Foods plc (ABF)Sugar is our business but people are our sweetest assets
