## Job Description

Medical Jobs, Lions Sightfirst Eye Hospital Jobs. Responsible for examining patients, diagnosing and managing common eye conditions, conducting detailed eye examinations, performing minor ophthalmic procedures, supporting surgical teams, providing patient education, and maintaining clinical records. Requires a Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery with specialised ophthalmic training, professional registration, and a valid practising licence. The position is based in Nairobi and requires on-site work.

Job Purpose 

To provide comprehensive primary ophthalmic care through assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and referral of eye conditions, while supporting surgical, outpatient, and outreach services to improve access to quality eye care at LSEH.

### Key Responsibilities

Outpatient Clinical Services

- Conduct eye examinations and assess patients presenting with ocular conditions

- Diagnose common eye diseases and initiate appropriate management

- Prescribe medications and basic optical corrections within scope of practice

Surgical Assistance

- Assist ophthalmologists during surgical procedures

- Prepare patients for surgery and support pre- and post-operative care

- Ensure adherence to theatre protocols and aseptic techniques

Patient Management & Care

- Provide treatment and follow-up for patients with eye conditions

- Offer patient counselling on eye health, treatment adherence, and prevention

- Ensure continuity of care through scheduled reviews and referrals

Referrals & Collaboration

- Identify cases requiring specialist ophthalmologist review or higher-level care

- Ensure timely and well-documented referrals

- Collaborate with multidisciplinary clinical teams for patient management

Outreach Services

- Participate in community outreach eye camps and screening programs

- Provide diagnosis, treatment, and referral services during outreach activities

- Support patient follow-up from outreach programs to hospital care

 Documentation & Reporting

- Maintain accurate and complete patient clinical records

- Document consultations, treatments, and procedures performed

- Support clinical data collection and reporting systems

Quality, Safety & Compliance

- Adhere to clinical protocols, SOPs, and SafeCare standards

- Ensure compliance with Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) and OSH guidelines

- Maintain patient confidentiality and ethical clinical practice

Health Education

- Educate patients and communities on eye health, prevention, and treatment adherence

- Participate in health promotion activities during outreach and clinic sessions

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

- Number of patients seen per month (as per target)

- Accuracy of diagnosis and treatment outcomes

- Referral appropriateness and timeliness

- Patient follow-up compliance rate

- Participation in outreach activities

- Completeness and accuracy of clinical documentation

- Adherence to SOPs and IPC standards

Reporting & Communication Lines

- Reports to: Head of Clinical Services / Ophthalmologist

- Works closely with: Ophthalmologists, Nurses, Optometrists, Theatre Staff, Outreach Team, Medical Records

- External collaboration: Community Health Volunteers (CHVs), referral facilities, outreach partners

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

- Diploma or Higher Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery

- Higher Diploma in Ophthalmic Clinical Services (Ophthalmic Clinical Officer training)

- Valid registration and practicing license with relevant regulatory body

- Experience in eye care or clinical practice

Desirable

- Experience in high-volume eye care facility

- Experience in outreach eye programs

- Training in quality improvement or SafeCare standards

Skills & Competencies

- Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills in ophthalmology

- Ability to perform basic ophthalmic procedures

- Good communication and patient counselling skills

- Teamwork and collaboration abilities

- Attention to detail and accuracy in clinical documentation

- Basic computer literacy (EMR systems, MS Office)
