Job description
Key responsibilities
Operation & Process Control
- Operate and continuously monitor rolling-oil pumps, tanks, filtration systems, cooling systems, valves, and associated equipment to support uninterrupted CRM operations.
- Maintain rolling-oil operating parameters within prescribed limits, including oil level, temperature, pressure, flow rate, and circulation performance.
- Ensure continuous oil supply and return circulation to the mill during production.
- Monitor oil quality, cleanliness, and system performance, and promptly report deviations from established operating standards.
- Respond to alarms, process abnormalities, and oil-supply interruptions in accordance with approved operating procedures.
- Conduct routine operational checks and take approved corrective actions to maintain stable process conditions.
Quality Management
- Monitor filtration system performance and filter differential pressure to ensure effective contaminant removal.
- Clean and replace filters in accordance with approved operating procedures.
- Monitor and control contamination from metal fines, sludge, water ingress, and foreign materials.
- Drain, collect, and dispose of sludge and contaminated oil in accordance with environmental and plant procedures.
- Maintain rolling-oil quality standards to minimize surface defects, staining, and rolling performance issues.
- Escalate oil-quality abnormalities that may affect product quality or production performance.
Autonomous Maintenance
- Conduct routine inspections of pumps, motors, valves, pipelines, tanks, filters, heat exchangers, and associated equipment.
- Identify, report, and record equipment abnormalities including leaks, excessive vibration, abnormal noise, overheating, and damaged components.
- Perform approved autonomous maintenance activities, equipment cleaning, lubrication checks, and other operator-maintainable tasks.
- Support maintenance teams during planned and corrective maintenance activities by providing operational assistance, equipment preparation, and required isolations.
- Verify readiness of standby equipment and promptly report deficiencies to ensure availability for changeover when required.
- Maintain equipment cleanliness and accessibility to support reliable operation and maintenance activities.
Production Support & Documentation
- Ensure rolling-oil systems are prepared and available prior to CRM startup and remain within operating parameters during production.
- Coordinate with CRM operators during startup, shutdown, product changeovers, and operational adjustments.
- Record and monitor oil temperature, pressure, flow, tank levels, filter condition, and other required operating parameters.
- Maintain accurate shift logs, inspection records, oil consumption records, and operational checklists.
- Provide effective shift handovers, highlighting equipment condition, process status, and outstanding issues.
- Escalate any abnormal conditions that may impact safety, quality, equipment reliability, or production performance.
Safety, Environment & Housekeeping
- Operate equipment in accordance with approved SOPs, risk assessments, and plant safety requirements.
- Correctly use required PPE and comply with LOTO, permit-to-work, and other plant safe-work procedures.
- Prevent, identify, and promptly respond to oil spills, leaks, and environmental hazards in accordance with emergency and environmental procedures.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping and ensure safe access around tanks, pumps, pipelines, and associated equipment.
- Participate in toolbox talks, safety inspections, emergency drills, incident reporting, and continuous improvement activities.
- Promote safe work practices and immediately report unsafe conditions, unsafe acts, and near-miss incidents.
Minimum Requirements
- KCSE Certificate.
- Government Trade Test Grade II General Fitting or equivalent technical qualification.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience operating industrial process or production equipment in a manufacturing or heavy industrial environment.
- Minimum 1 year’s experience operating oil circulation, filtration, cooling, lubrication, hydraulic, or similar industrial fluid-handling systems.
Added Advantage
- Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Training in chemical handling, spill response, fire safety, emergency response, and first aid.
- Knowledge of 6S, TPM, and Autonomous Maintenance.
- Awareness of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 management systems.
- Experience in a Cold Rolling Mill (CRM) or similar continuous-process plant.
Technical Competencies
- Knowledge of rolling-oil circulation, filtration, cooling, and storage systems.
- Ability to operate and monitor pumps, filters, tanks, valves, heat exchangers, and associated equipment.
- Understanding of oil temperature, pressure, flow, level, contamination, and cleanliness control.
- Ability to identify and report equipment abnormalities such as leaks, vibration, overheating, and pressure loss.
- Ability to interpret SOPs, process flow diagrams, gauges, and operating parameters.
- Knowledge of safe work practices, LOTO, permit-to-work systems, and PPE requirements.
- Good record-keeping, communication, and shift handover skills
