Key roles and responsibilities
Study material development:
Oversee and manage the development or review of study guides (full or wrap-around)Seek feedback from all stakeholders and keep a record of required changes to study guides in anticipation of the review cycleMonitor the appropriateness of the prescribed textbook and editionsEnsure continued alignment between study guide and textbook, where applicableUpdate study guides to cater for new textbook editionsAssessment:
Draft all formal assessments for allocated modulesConsider internal and external pre-moderation feedback and implement changes as requiredConduct internal pre-moderation for modules in field of expertiseBrief markers and moderators, and provide content support during the marking processMark a prescribed minimum number of assessments (+- 3) to fine tune marking guideline/memorandumConsider markers’ reports and decide on appropriate actionConsider moderators’ reports and decide on appropriate action, in consultation with programme coordinator, Discipline Leader, and Head of School.Sign off on assessment resultsActively participate in the investigation/management of modules with continuously low pass ratesLearning journey design:
Attend both internal and external training sessions, workshops, and conferences to enhance skills in module design and assessmentActively collaborate with discipline leader and programme coordinator to continuously enhance the learning journeyLMS course environmentDesign and draft materials needed for the course environment (announcements, etc.)Populate and maintain the course environment for modules ownedLearning and student support:
Invite guest speakers to enrich modules and host three live online sessions per semester to support student understanding and engagement.Draft additional support materials for students for difficult modulesPostgraduate supervision:
Supervise honour’s and master's research to completionReview research proposals and support ethics applicationsNominate and liaise with internal and external examinersParticipate in postgraduate research committee processesResearch and professional development:
Conduct research in the field of expertise and/or learning design in the field of expertiseStay informed about emerging trends in higher education and instructional methodologiesEngage with industry, professional networks and associations to enhance collaboration and knowledge sharing
Requirements
Doctorate
Minimum requirement:
Strong academic background in educational leadership and management, preferably with experience in school or education leadership roles.Knowledge of the frameworks that underpin South African education practices for the modules listed above, with the ability to apply these principles to school and education system contexts.At least two years of module coordination experience in a tertiary institution.Evidence of postgraduate supervision experience, preferably with completions.Sound teaching and learning, assessment, and study material development skills.Practical own teaching experience highly recommended.Ability to apply instructional design principles to develop engaging, interactive, and well-aligned learning experiences in the distance learning mode.High level of computer proficiency with good knowledge of modern Information Technology infrastructure and online learning platforms.A record of accredited research publications in the field.Experience as a programme coordinator beneficialQualification:
Doctoral degree (NQF Level 10) in education, preferably in educational leadership and management or a closely related fieldKey attributes:
Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage professionally and collaboratively in a remote working environment.Strong organisational, time management, and coordination skills, with the ability to manage a continuous flow of tasks, prioritise effectively, and consistently meet deadlines.High levels of self-motivation, accountability, and the ability to work independently in a structured, task-driven remote environment with minimal supervision.Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, contributing positively to shared goals while coordinating effectively across virtual platforms.Resilience, adaptability, and the ability to remain productive and solution-focused in a fast-paced and changing work environment.
