## Job Description

### ROLE PURPOSE

CFK Africa believes the people closest to a problem are closest to its solution and that includes who tells the story. The provides overall strategic and creative leadership for CFK Africa’s communications, brand, and storytelling, and leads the Youth Media Corps: a movement that mobilizes young journalists, content creators, and digital storytellers from slum communities to produce authentic, high-quality content that elevates youth talent and community insight.
Through the Corps, the Communications Manager will oversee the production of video profiles, podcasts, short films, advocacy media, and visual storytelling that advance youth empowerment, civic engagement, and youth-led development. By placing cameras, microphones, and editorial power in the hands of youth, the Youth Media Corps redefines who tells the stories in slums and who shapes development priorities. This role is critical to the overall positioning, visibility and success of CFK’s programs, including the Youth Development Network (YDN), which will place youth in employment, enhance public health, improve educational outcomes, and showcase that when talent meets opportunity, slum youth can break from survival mode to purpose driven pathways.
The role carries accountability for communications strategy and brand, external relations and media, digital and content channels, the Youth Media Corps, resource-mobilization communications, team leadership, financial stewardship, safeguarding, and demonstrable reach and impact.

### SCOPE OF ROLE

- Strategic reach: Overall leadership of CFK’s communications, brand, and storytelling, and of the Youth Media Corps, from the Kibera base to national and international audiences.

- People: Leads a multidisciplinary communications and media team and a corps of young journalists, creators, and storytellers, alongside freelance and partner talent.

- Partnerships: Serves as CFK’s senior communications representative to media, donors, NGOs, philanthropies, researchers, and youth networks.

- Resources: Accountable for communications budgets, donor compliance, and mobilizing the funding and partnerships required to sustain and scale the function and the Corps.

### KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Communications & Brand Leadership

- Set and drive CFK Africa’s communications and brand strategy, ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission, values, and strategic plan.

- Protect and grow the CFK brand across all channels and audiences, maintaining a consistent, credible, and compelling voice.

- Advise the Executive team and Board on positioning, narrative, reputation, and communications risk, and act as a senior spokesperson when required.

- Champion an ethical, community-led approach to storytelling that centers dignity and youth voice over deficit narratives.

The Youth Media Corps

Lead the design, launch, and continuous development of the Youth Media Corps, mobilizing and mentoring young creators to produce video profiles, podcasts, short films, advocacy media, and visual storytelling. Ensure the Corps delivers on its core aims:

- Amplify the successes of the YDN Program — produce content that showcases and connects the components of the YDN to other CFK programs, strengthening its visibility and reach.

- Spotlight youth & enterprise — highlight youth innovations and local entrepreneurs, elevating talent and opportunity within slum communities.

- Strengthen the evidence base — generate media and insight that support NGOs, philanthropies, and researchers with authentic, ground-level evidence.

- Shift the narrative — create media that reframes slum narratives and redefines who tells the story and who shapes development priorities.

- Build the capacity of Corps members through training, mentorship, editorial support, and pathways into media, creative, and economic opportunity.

External Relations, Media & Advocacy

- Lead media and public relations, building relationships with journalists and outlets and securing quality coverage of CFK’s work and youth voices.

- Position CFK and its young storytellers in advocacy and sector forums that influence development priorities and policy.

- Manage reputation and issues communications, responding swiftly and responsibly to emerging risks.

Digital, Content & Channels

- Own CFK’s digital presence website, social media, and multimedia channels driving reach, engagement, and audience growth.

- Set editorial standards, calendars, and quality benchmarks across all content, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and creative excellence.

- Use analytics to understand audiences and continuously improve content performance and impact.

Resource-Mobilization & Partnership Communications

- Produce compelling communications, campaigns, and donor-facing materials that support fundraising and partnership goals.

- Cultivate communications partnerships with donors, NGOs, philanthropies, researchers, and youth networks, and provide timely, high-quality reporting.

- Develop sustainability pathways including content services, licensing, and partnerships that reduce long-term grant dependency for the function.

Team Leadership & People Management

- Lead, motivate, and develop a high-performing communications and media team, setting clear objectives and holding staff accountable for results.

- Mentor Corps members and junior staff, acting as a role model and fostering a culture of learning, inclusion, creativity, and safeguarding.

- Manage performance, workforce planning, and recruitment for the function in partnership with the HR function.

Financial Management & Compliance

- Hold overall accountability for communications and Corps budgets, ensuring spend is on-target, well-documented, and compliant with CFK Africa procedures and donor regulations.

- Oversee procurement, contracts, and talent agreements in line with organizational policy and value-for-money principles.

Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning & Impact

- Define indicators and frameworks that capture reach, engagement, narrative change, and outcomes for Corps members and audiences.

- Ensure accurate data collection and use evidence to drive learning, adaptation, and continuous improvement across channels and content.

- Report regularly on communications and Corps impact to internal and external stakeholders.

SAFEGUARDING & ETHICAL STORYTELLING

This role produces and publishes media featuring children, young people, and community members including on sensitive themes such as girls’ empowerment. Safeguarding and ethical storytelling are central to the post. The Manager must uphold CFK Africa’s safeguarding and child-protection standards, ensure informed consent and appropriate image and story rights (with particular care for minors and vulnerable participants), protect contributors from harm or exploitation, and ensure all staff, Corps members, and partners understand and comply with these standards. The successful candidate will be required to undergo relevant background checks

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

- A Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. communications, journalism, media, marketing, or social sciences); a Bachelor’s degree with exceptional relevant experience may be considered.

- At least 7 years’ progressive experience in communications, media, or content, including significant senior leadership responsibility.

- Proven track record of building a brand and delivering high-quality, high-reach content across digital and traditional channels.

- Demonstrated success in managing budgets and delivering against ambitious targets in compliance with donor regulations.

- Strong media relations networks and experience mobilizing resources or partnerships through communications.

- Experience building or mentoring youth, community, or citizen-media programs.

- Hands-on multimedia production skills (video, audio, photography, design) or strong experience directing them.

- Familiarity with ethical storytelling, safeguarding in media, and narrative-change or advocacy communications.
