The Company's Head Office is situated at Matundu Mbulo Office Complex, behind Gateway Mall, Area 47 Sector 1, Lilongwe.SSCL is a subsidiary of Greenbelt Investments Holdings Limited and is engaged in the development of sugar plantations, production of sugar and its by-products for the Malawi and export markets.The Company is looking for a dynamic, disciplined and well-experienced individual to fill the position of Chief Chemist.JOB SUMMARYThe Chief Chemist will be responsible for supervising chemical analysis processes and reviewing work assignments of chemists and support staff to ensure optimum staff utilization. The incumbent will also plan analytical procedures for complex analyses and review special chemical investigations.KEY REQUIREMENTSRequired Qualifications and Experience:- Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or a related field. A Master's Degree will be an added advantage.- At least 7 years' experience in a senior or leadership role in a chemical laboratory or related industry.- In-depth knowledge of chemical analysis techniques and instrumentation.- Familiarity with relevant industry standards, regulations and safety protocols.- Strong understanding of quality control principles and practices.- Demonstrated leadership and team management skills.- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.- Proficiency in computer software and data analysis tools.- Certification or licensure as a Chemist by a professional body, where required by local regulations and industry standards.REQUIRED SKILLS- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.- Excellent knowledge of laboratory techniques, instruments and analytical methods.- Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation.- Effective leadership and team management abilities.- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.- High attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks.- Knowledge of quality control principles and procedures.- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.- Proficiency in computer software and data management systems.- Strong understanding of safety protocols and regulations.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES- Oversee day-to-day laboratory operations, ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures and safety protocols.- Develop and implement accurate and reliable testing methodologies for chemical analysis.- Conduct complex chemical analyses of raw materials, finished products and environmental samples using appropriate analytical techniques and instruments.- Implement quality control measures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results.- Ensure regular calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.- Analyze test results, interpret data and prepare comprehensive reports with recommendations.- Keep abreast of developments in chemical analysis techniques and technologies and identify opportunities to improve laboratory efficiency.- Lead, train, mentor and develop laboratory staff to promote a high-performing and collaborative work environment.- Collaborate with relevant Government agencies, including the Malawi Bureau of Standards.- Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations and industry standards relating to chemical testing and laboratory safety.- Monitor and control laboratory expenses and participate in budget preparation and management.- Make recommendations for the procurement of laboratory equipment, chemicals and other supplies.HOW TO APPLYQualified and interested candidates should send their Curriculum Vitae (CV), including the names of three traceable referees, to:The Chief Executive OfficerSalima Sugar Company LimitedP.O.
